I agree that what's most interesting about the 5/8/77 S>F is in fact the "breathability" of the version...I don't think it;'s the best one, and in fact I think the Fire actually goes on a bit longer than it needs to, but it's a little like how a great comedian like Jack Benny could get a bigger laugh by pausing and saying nothing rather than trying to fill the spaces with a lot of needless overkill...it's a great version as others pointed out, too, b/c Phil really leads the way and both songs--but espcially Fire--are just MADE for the bass.

Overally, never apologize for Barton Hall. Like anything that's astoundingly popular, it suffers from the backlash effect, but it must be mentioned in any "best of" Dead show discussion...even if there are in fact better shows from that same year (and I do believe there are.)

Besides, everyone knows 10/29/77 is the best show the Dead ever played ;-)
